I’m surfing the theatre of cruelty this national day of mourning, will toss some links up later tonight. There’s that saying, something happens and the crazies come out of the woodwork, but all I’m seeing are crazy-haters today, doing god’s work, shaming the depressives. The fear-mongering DSM spewing psycho-bigots with their intimidating screeds on what to do with the severe and persistent mentally ill, that theatre of cruelty. I read the posts and don’t know where to go. I stare at the comment box and don’t know how to start. Vonnegut’s dead, Molly’s gone, I could tell them about my gramma, make them weep. Johnny Cash? I’ll use him, an American icon, we all agree on Johnny Cash. No, it’s that mental midget Nikki Giovanni, she kicked him out of class, you know, clearly she has all the answers.
Well, start we must. I believe this calls for my first shot at an open letter.
Asking what made him do it is only natural, but getting intimate with ambiguity might be a nice change from your usual insight-free certainties and literal-minded rigidity. Hold onto the unknown, you get used to it, let the seeking matter, and all the conclusions at best approximations. You can do this, you can speculate, at times like this wonder is worth defending. I know you want the truth, I will do that now, tell the truth about the things you should know. Number one, your Savior was insane. Let’s get the whole loaf on the table, here. Something to think about in between ravings on what has to be done with nutters like
Cho Jesus, both of ’em objectively and certifiably insane. You say it every time, look! It’s in the DSM.
But one of these men was not like the other. The map is not the territory, is it?
Since we’re all asking unanswerable questions, tell me, what keeps you from killing people?
And how do you offer this component that keeps you from harming others to those who appear to be missing it?
But maybe you don’t want to offer them your valuable component. It’s not like you’re going to get an equal return on investment, the anti-social are stingy like that. I’m trying to speak your language here. In a free market, you don’t have to offer anything, fair enough.
“Anything” includes locking them up. Let me repeat that slower for you. “I want nothing to do with this deviant” does not equate to “I am going to lock you up.” See? Sometimes there’s a difference between one thing and the other.
As you embark on your campaign to prevent school shootings you may ask how to do that if you don’t get to lock all the freaks up in jail, yes that is a puzzler.
Consider the stratergy.
People devoid of empathy are dangerous. They are the ones you need to reach. The only hope is that they learn empathy. Your safety depends on this. The only way they will learn empathy is by experiencing it. And after all that there’s no guarantees. Is it worth the effort, you tell me.
