Double-binds, or paradoxical injunctions are crazy-making, they drive people insane. Whatever you call them, their use is ubiquitous, and always carry an implied but unstated threat that frightens one into submission. We can’t articulate what is unsettling, we just know there’s something wrong with the statement. And that’s a start.
